1. GET USED TO REJECTION.

You must first get used to rejection and you must understand that it is not the end. Jack Ma applied for a job at many different places including KFC and the Police Department but he was always rejected. He was even rejected by Harvard 10 times! Harvard probably regrets their decision now.

2. KEEP YOUR DREAM ALIVE.

The secret to success is to keep your dream alive. You must keep your dream alive because it might come true some day.

3. FOCUS ON CULTURE.

The key to a successful business is to develop a culture of helping others instead of just working for money and this is what Jack Ma has done in his business.

4. IGNORE THE CRITICS.

When Jack Ma was getting started many people told him that his business idea was very stupid but now millions of people are using his “stupid” idea and he is now the richest man in Mainland China.

5. GET INSPIRED.

Jack Ma says he draws inspiration from many sources including movies. He was inspired by movies like, Forrest Gump and The Godfather. He even learned how to write good speeches by watching Whitney Houston sing in The Bodyguard!

6. STAY FOCUSED.

As a CEO, Jack Ma has to say no to thousands of opportunities every day. However, he always stays focused because he only considers opportunities that are aligned with the mission of his business.

7. HAVE A GOOD NAME.

Jack Ma chose ‘Alibaba’ as the name of his business because he found out that ‘Alibaba and the 40 Thieves’ are very popular folk tale. Make sure you choose a recognizable and familiar name for your business.

8. CUSTOMERS ARE NUMBER 1.

Jack Ma always puts his customers first and he has a very interesting motto: “Customers first, Employees second, Shareholders third.”

9. HAVE PASSION.

You must have passion and the best way to do this is to develop a hard-working spirit. Your business will never succeed if you work only from 08:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m. If this is the best you can do then you might as well try something else. If you want to succeed, make sure you go the extra mile.

10. DON’T COMPLAIN, LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES

Jack Ma firmly believes that where people are complaining, there is always opportunity. When people complain, that means there is a problem and if you solve that problem, you will be able to seize the opportunity and succeed.
